After applying SP1 for MOSS we found that the Advanced Search Web Part doesnt work if you have the 'Show Properties' option unselected. It displays the error;
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
A frantic google later and i came across the hotfix pack for February 08 which contains a somewhat suprising number of fixes and ultimately my ray of light : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948947/en-us
So overall lesson when applying SP1 - make sure you grab the post SP1 Hot Fixes. Spence Harbar has a nice cumulative list over on his blog.
